FM Listening Systems

Personal FM systems (also called Personal PA Systems) are another listening aid. The system is like a miniature radio station. There is a transmitter microphone used by the speaker, and a receiver used by the listener. Many religious services already make FM Systems available to members of their congregation. These systems are not inexpensive, but are well worth the expense. If you own a system yourself, don't be hesitant to ask a speaker if he or she would be willing to use the device. Usually, it would only require the speaker to wear a small lapel microphone, and have an electrical outlet avalable for the small transmitter.

The FCC has assigned frequencies for use by public and private systems so there should be no interference from other transmitting devices.

FM systems are very useful in a classroom. The teacher can "speak directly" to the student with hearing loss, thereby eliminating most background noise. The individual can wear the system with or without a hearing aid. Each student with a hearing loss would need a separate FM device for them to take advantage of this.
