My journey to hearing loss began in 1979 when I was diagnosed with vertigo. I was progressively losing my balance, and was told that it was due to an inner ear disorder.
Walking became a problem and I began using a cane to get around. In fact, I started a cottage industry designing custom decorated canes - but more about this later
Over several years, my balance improved, but my hearing deteriorated. Soon I had severe hearing loss in both ears. As a result, I needed two hearing aids.
Last June I lost all of my hearing.
I decided to investigate having a cochlear implant.
There were several tests that I had to take, including an audiology test and a CAT scan. I met with a social worker, and was examined by a surgeon. I used Dr. Daniel Lee at the University of Massachusetts Medical Memorial Hospital. He performed the surgery and inserted the implant.
Three weeks later the implant was activated by the audiologist, Eva Bero, M.A., CCC-A. They worked together as a team, and I was given a series of appointments for the mapping. Mapping is the process of adjusting the sound levels on the implant to provide the best possible results. I was very lucky and began to hear immediately when the implant was activated. Not all candidates get the same results.
I now use the implant daily. At night I take it off. I also remove it when I go swimming as it cannot get wet. My implant uses three batteries which have to be changed every five days - a small price to pay for the ability to hear again!
Communication has always been an important part of my life, and in spite of being deaf, I continue to teach and run workshops. I am now 72 years of age. My life has changed in many ways, and the journey has been trying, but I continue to live life to its fullest, savoring every day for the surprises it holds.
