Walking Canes

Walking Canes? I know, it sounds silly, and you can see just fine. But a colorful cane can also be a wonderful safety device for the person with a hearing impairment. When crossing the street drivers are not aware that you have a hearing problem, and you may not hear approaching vehicles. By using a colorful cane, the driver can see that you may need extra time crossing the street.

Hearing problems are invisible. As a result, it is essential to take safety precautions. People do not know that you may have difficulty hearing, or that you may not be able to hear at all. By using a cane, you can protect yourself and aid your balance.

When I was first diagnosed with vertigo, I needed a cane for safe walking. In fact, I used my cane so much that I decided to design creative canes to match my outfits. Soon I had a closet of colorful canes. Others admired my chic canes and, before long, I had many requests to design and create custom canes.

I began making canes in assorted colors and began decorating them with items to match their hobbies and interests. I have made a piano cane, a fishing cane, a golf cane, a button and bows cane, and even - a candy cane! I also had orders for a mahjong cane, a bridge cane, a tennis cane, and a baseball cane.

The fun part was designing unique products that inspired friends to ask where the cane came from rather than why I was using a cane. I have shpped canes overseas, and even though I do not advertise, I am still getting orders for all kinds of canes.

My hearing loss has led to many interesting events. I now have a cochlear implant and this has allowed me to continue my varied activities. Safety for people with a hearing loss is essential and my creative canes have served a needed function for me and for many others with hearing problems.
